Ise Netsuke

It flourished during the Edo period(1603-1867)as a souvenir of the Ise pilgrimage.

The wood of the Japanese boxwood on Mount Asakuma of the Ise Shrine is used,

Many of the works are characterized by their wish for the blessings of Ise-san.

About Netsuke

Netsuke are objects used as a fasteners for items hung from the sash(obi) of traditional outfits,

suchas drawstring purses(kinchaku), small cases(inro), and wallets(saifu). The history of netsuke dates back some 400years.

Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, these fasteners combine the wonder of intricate carvings with pleasingly tactile form and witty design; their delight with their playfulness.

Netsuke become more valuable over time, as continued use gives them a rich, beautiful hue;

they are miniature works of art the mature through the user's touch.

How Netsuke are made

The distinctive feature of the 'Ise Netsuke' is its use of yellow boxwood from Mount Asakuma which is located behind Ise Shrine.

Our work begins when we go to the mountains to select the trees.

Asakuma yew trees are hard and have dense annual rings, making them ideal for detailed engraving.

Among Ise netsuke craftsmen, it is said to be the world's best boxwood. We use an engraving knife. The smaller ones are self-made.

Rough carving

Rough carving involves pressing the chisel against the wall.

Detailed carving is done with a carving knife

Carve down to the smallest and most invisible details.

Polishing

Although netsuke craftsmen are often thought of as carvers, polishing is also important in order to create netsuke that feel good when held in the hand and produce a beautiful 'nare'.

The craftsmen spend so much time polishing that they are told to spend a month polishing what they have spent a month carving.

Craftsmen spend so much time polishing that they are said to spend a month polishing what they have spent a month carving.

Colouring

Colour is applied using a liquid made from boiled-down berries, for example, called 'yasha'.

Polished and polished with horsehair to a shine.
